was born on on December 22, 1912 in Karnack, Texas. Her parents were Thomas Jefferson Taylor & Minnie Lee Pattillo Taylor. Her wealthy father was a merchant, entrepreneur and real estate investor. Lady Bird enjoyed a privileged upbringing and graduated from the University of Texas and earned a bachelor's degree in art. She took a course in journalism in 1933, with ambitions to become a newspaper reporter. Lady Bird met met Lyndon Johnson in 1934 and he proposed just two days later. The couple were married seven weeks later on November 17, 1934 and had two children; Lynda Bird (1944 – present) and Luci Baines (1947 – present). Lady Bird steadfastly supported her husband's political career and borrowed from her inheritance to help finance his first election campaign.

Lyndon Johnson was a demanding husband and expected his wife to perform traditional housewifely duties and ensure that his life ran smoothly. She laid out his clothes and served him breakfast in bed. He was the head of the family and expected his wife to play a subordinate role. She worked to meet her husband's demands but also played a part in political programs including issues relating to the rights of women. Lady Bird was a strong supporter of the Head Start promoting comprehensive early childhood education and the "war on poverty". She actively lobbied Congress for legislation on the "beautification" of America's cities and highways,  the 1965 Highway Beautification Act. Her husband's presidency ended on January 20, 1969.

Lady Bird Johnson suffered a stroke in 2002 which left her with difficulty speaking. She died on July 11, 2007 at the age of 94.
