Laura was well educated at Southern Methodist University and received a Master of Library Science at University of Texas at Austin. After completing her education Laura began her career as an elementary school teacher and librarian at the Mollie Dawson Elementary school. Laura met George Bush at a barbeque, it was love at first sight and the couple were married three months later on November 5, 1977 at the First United Methodist Church in Midland. They had twin daughters whose names are Barbara Pierce Bush and Jenna Welch Hager. Laura Bush supported her husband in his political career which led them both to the White House.

In December 2008 she received the Freedom Award from the relief organization Christian Freedom International. Her husband's presidency drew to a close and the couple left the White House on January 20, 2009.
