Letitia Tyler was a semi-invalid and was charitable to the needy and the afflicted. She remained a kind and close confidante of her husband until her untimely death.

Facts about Letitia Tyler: The Life of Letitia Tyler
Facts and Info: Letitia was born on November 12, 1790 on her parents' plantation near Richmond, Virginia. Letitia was raised in the highly religious household where she learned the social and domestic duties necessary to run the plantation. Letitia was always painfully shy and although she was engaged for five years before she married John Tyler it was said they they did not share so much as a kiss until after they were married. Their marriage took place on
29 March, 1813 on her father's plantation. The couple raised 7 children. Two years before her husband was elected president, Letitia Tyler suffered a stroke which left her incapacitated and confined to a wheelchair. Her poor health coupled with her shyness resulted in her asking Priscilla Tyler, daughter-in-law,  to assist her in her duties as White House hostess. Letitia became First Lady on April 4, 1841 and despite her illness was a close confidante of her husband. She lived on the second floor of the White House and only came down for one social occasion when attended her daughter's wedding to William Waller in 1842. Letitia Tyler but died  when she was 51 years old, while her husband was still in office, on September 10, 1842. Her daughter-in-law Priscilla Tyler continued in the role of First Lady until the second marriage of John Tyler to Julia Tyler.
